Naked Queue

I was thinking of the word “queue” for many, many years. I had heard it in British movies, and read it in novels, and I liked how it was spelled.  Apparently, the Brits are renowned for their ability to queue up.  I wanted to do a lineup of guys but different than the usual where everyone is standing in the same position.  I wanted the line curved to show all the angles of the guys as they turned around.  I really like it.  It’s almost like a single figure in transit, but each figure in progression is new and very different.  The tile work is tedious and time-consuming for me (lining and coloring took days and days), but I felt these guys in their casual stances and half-circular queue needed a more formal, linear, and rigid environment for contrast.  These guys are obviously comfortable and practiced in their queuing up as no one is frustrated or impatient as they keep their place and wait their turn.

I don’t often share the sketches I create to examine and refine the layout and placement of the figures in my drawings.  I felt this piece needed to be carefully planned, and so, I created several preliminary sketches to try and get it just right.  [See below.]
