ANNOUNCEMENT
Michael Kirwan
has created a series of hot, original illustrations
for a soon-to-be-released book called
Backwoods
an erotic novel-in-stories by
Natty Soltesz
and published by
Rebel Satori Press and Queermojo.

Here is the steamy
underside of rural America, the back roads,
back doors, and back rooms of a town called
Groom, Pennsylvania. Secrets are sacred in a
place where ones business is everyones
business, and the erotic stories in
Backwoods bare them all. Conceived as a
gay-themed erotic take on Sherwood
Andersons Winesburg, Ohio, Backwoods is by
turn poignant and pornographic, romantic and
raunchy, tender and titillating. Literal
climaxes are underpinned by an authentic
observation of small-town lives, both
repressed and unreserved. |

A
New Art Book Release
JUST SO HORNY

The Art of Michael Kirwan
Over two decades of the hottest and horniest
hand-drawn art by Michael Kirwan have been superbly
selected for this book. An artist who follows
his own beat, Michael's art lets you pull aside the
curtains, spy through the bushes, or peek in the
gaps around the stall door to witness real guys
enjoying steamy encounters when they are just so
horny to not pass up the opportunity for sexual
release. The large-format layout of this book allows the
viewer to revel in the meticulous details and
collateral environments that make Michael's drawings
so unique and fascinating.
Unmatched for his ability to illustrate the guys
that are in the world around us, Michael Kirwan
draws life into the men we see every day as we have
that brief fantasy thought of what it would be like
to get into their pants. Those dirty thoughts
create the scenes as Michael puts to paper the guys
who squeeze their dicks in public through their
shorts, the men who cruise the parks in bulging
jeans, the fellows in suits who just need a quick
blowjob on their way homes to their wives, and the
young guys who finally screw up their courage and
reach over to grab someone else's cock for the first
time. These are the real men who are having
sex with men because they are just so horny.
Michael Kirwan's work has been displayed around the
world in galleries, businesses, private collections,
and homes. Fans and collectors have
appreciated his distinctive style and talents by
purchasing his original works of art. After
years of having his drawings published in porn
magazines, this is the first time such a copious
amount of Michael's art has been collected together
in a resplendently designed hardcover book.
Published by Bruno Gmόnder Verlag GmbH (who are
renowned for their high quality and lavish standards
in publishing erotic art books and compilations), you
will want to own a copy of this book to enjoy
Michael Kirwan's work in this truly handsome format.
Support your local, gay bookstore by stopping in and
ordering a copy in advance. While you are
there, you just might bump into another guy who is
just so horny, too. Enjoy!

presents
Donkey Punch Radio
with Jimmy Palmieri
and Angie Miller

Michael Kirwan is an erotic artist and a keen
observer of the social/cultural/sexual scene
within the gay community who questions the
status quo in both his artwork and his words.
He has been described as "obstinate, aloof,
opinionated, crass, dismissive, crude, vulgar,
unfiltered, annoying, revolutionary, and
sarcastic," and those assessments only cover
what his ardent supporters have had to say about
him.
Kirwan was born in NYC in 1953, and witnessed
first-hand the evolution of the historic
emergence of the "gay pride" movement. He
later spent a dozen years in Miami Beach and for
the past five years has lived in Los Angeles.
His sex-centric artwork is familiar to men all
over the world who care enough about art,
understand their own sexual identity, and are
comfortable seeing that there is some measure of
humor involved in our lewd and rascally
activities. |

Presents
A
Nice Surprise
A few
months ago I ran into a former editor of mine
back from the olden days. In the course of our
genial catching up, he mentioned that he had
some of my illustrations buried somewhere in his
garage. This weekend he unearthed some pieces
that I had long ago figured to be lost in time
and space. Three of these images are from my
very early days at STROKE, the Rolls Royce of
gay porn (where from I got my first-ever
paycheck for doing what I love). How do I know
that they are a product of my STROKE time? Well,
one of them features a dwarf, another has an
amputee, and the third depicts a guy with
obvious birth defects (...uh, no. I'm not going
to find the new and improved politically correct
euphemism) smoking a cigarette. Back when I
began my career/vocation I was determined to
portray as many different kinds of queers as I
could imagine (whom I'd certainly have eager sex
with) and thought some were kept invisible by
most of the gay artists of that era. I recall
sending in a batch of drawings (maybe 10-15) and
the editor explaining to me how they would be
grouped per magazine issue. When he said that
the not-so-perfect guys would be packaged
together I told him that I didn't want it done
that way. These guys needed to be just part of a
regular segment not partitioned off into a
"freak" zone. He's a brilliant guy and got my
argument right away. Whether a different color
or age or in this case compacted, surgically
abbreviated or genetically stunted, we are all
queers and very equal in the most relevant way
possible. I'm proud of these three drawings and
what they represented about our community in the
pages of STROKE, and (so what? I have an ego!!!
Haha!!) about how I craftily intellectualized
the process from the inception of my commitment
to homoerotica. ALL of us are amazing in all of
our individual beauty. So, enjoy this little
holiday treasure and feel free to
send comments
about this stuff or anything else you want to
communicate.

The
Complete Bear.com
Vote for the Best of Bears

Am I a Bear? I guess I certainly fit the
criteria.... I'm a "big" guy, I've got hair
all over my body and when I go out for the
night I gear up in leather. The thing is...
I'm an artist that draws guys having (or
contemplating or resisting) sex and when I'm
in the act --- composing and detailing a
scenario for hours or days --- I inhabit my
characters so I can see and "feel" what
they're experiencing. That way I can portray
them as being "real" people. So sometimes
I'm a swaggering homophobe, sometime a
nervous teenager, sometimes an errant family
man or a gangbanger on the down-low, or an
old creep trying to recapture the innocence
of youth. I can spend so much time
developing and infusing these personalities
with their individual biographies that I
sometimes lose sight of who exactly I am. A
Bear is what I am but I'm truly in my
element when I'm someone else altogether...
even when I'm "in the skin" of a Bear I'm
inking and coloring, it's not really me but
is more me than.... Well, now I'm just
teetering into Weirdsville.... Hahaha!!!
Vote for me!

You
Be The Judge!
|
|
Did
we date in High School?
 |
from the
1972 Yearbook for Cardinal Spellman High School
(Bronx, New York City) showing classmates Sonia
Sotomayor (Voted Most Likely to become a Supreme
Court Judge) and Michael Kirwan (Voted Most
Likely to become a World-Renowned Pornographer)
|
Nah, I can't remember ever having spoken a word to
her in the four years we spent at the Cardinal
Spellman (He of the picking up chorus boys in the
official Diocese limousine
for "special" evenings) High School.
She was one
of the "good" people and I was an
irreverent, agitating
asshole. But it's nice to know that at least one
other person from the class of '72 did something
noteworthy. Hahaha!!!!
I recently dug
out my old Yearbook to refresh my memory. I noticed
that Ms. Sotomayor was President of the Class, in
the National Honors Society, part of Student
Government, and on something called the Constitution
Committee. Organizations that I was absolutely
oblivious to during my tenure in Cardinal Spellman.
My own student
rιsumι was Glee Club 1-3 and "The Works" 2-3 which I
think was the school "magazine." The newspaper was
"The Pilot" and we were the edgy artsy alternative
rag. I was roundly and soundly condemned for
inserting at the last minute (a common ruse I used
during my illustration days) a "Blessed Virgin"
depiction of a sea lion. There was a similar (but
not quite as vicious) contretemps about a lascivious
dancing elephant as I recall and some other nonsense
about an anti-war essay I'd snuck in.
I'm pretty
sure that the future judge and I never even crossed
paths. In Freshman and Sophomore years, Spellman was
"co-institutional" so the girls were on one side of
the building and we were on the other. The only time
we were able to mingle was at lunch,
rallies/masses/dances/assemblies. Miss Sotomayor
moved in circles of which I had no awareness
whatsoever. To be frank, unless a girl was either
beautiful, pretty, slutty or a freak, I didn't
"see" them at all, and she wasn't a looker. She
certainly never sat next to me in Detention where I
was a "regular." I was actually surprised that she
wasn't listed as a member of "Vaya" the Hispanic
club (at that time it would've been 99% Puerto
Rican... there just wasn't a recognizable population
of anything other than PR's in NYC in '68-'72).
There are a couple of clubs listed in the yearbook
that don't even suggest what their purpose
was.... BIZARRE.
By the way, it
was Yours Truly who forced the school to offer Art
as a course for boys. Before I fucked everyone over,
the males could only take Mechanical Art
(engineering draftsmanship). Typing was another
class I inveigled the administration to let boys
take (although I didn't avail myself of that
opportunity personally). I was pretty much a
constant nuisance about almost every aspect of the
school's structure. Now that I think of it, perhaps
the reason I was so spectacularly uninvolved with
the student body was because I considered myself an
equal (and often a better) of the staff and so
that's where I trained my energy. That and smoking
dope and getting laid. HAHAHAHA!!!!!!

It's very
difficult for me to recognize just how the judicial system champions
America's gay citizenry with any real enthusiasm. What protections and
accommodations we have managed to secure in the last forty years still
don't vest us with the same equal rights afforded straight people in this
country. It has recently come to light that the current administration is
deliberately seeding Justice Departments all across the nation with
graduates from law schools operated by rabid fundamentalist Christian
organizations. What validity will pro-gay legislation have if those
handpicked officials arbitrarily refuse to prosecute civil rights laws
designed to ensure our safety because of their moral convictions? We now
have a quasi-elected, dynastic head-of-state who disregards international
law and blithely renders the Constitution of the United States in tattered
shreds with his fervor to reshape the world as he sees fit. General Peter
Pace recently declared that homosexuals were too morally unclean to murder
Arabs and not one of the presidential contenders demanded his
resignation. I am appalled by the complacency of a vast number of queers,
I am horrified to witness the ascension of the hate and fear mongers
disguised as religious zealots, but I am also encouraged and inspired by
entities such as the Lambda Legal that valiantly take on the system to
cement our rightful place in society.

The finalist entries will be posted online through
the
Lambda Legal website on or around May 21, 2007.

Lewd Nite

The purpose of Lewd Nite is to
allow visual artists to show offensive artwork. You
won't find paintings of palm trees, or pet portraiture. No landscapes or
ho-hum watercolors. Lewd Nite will exhibit frightening,
repulsive and wrong subject matter. This work will
incite, bother and disturb. The show will offend you
spiritually, emotionally, racially, sexually and
politically. We are not only looking to push the
envelope, we would like the envelope to disappear so
that we may see what is past it. The work will question
your ideas about what is acceptable in the visual

Artist's Statement
I tracked down and
studied as many porn illustrations as I could find
when I was originally approached by Dugent
Publishing to try my hand at erotic artwork. These
many years later I can't recall the artists or
their output, but I can still remember noticing
that the women depicted were interchangeable,
vacant-eyed mannequins fulfilling some guy's
lustful expectations with zombie-like enthusiasm.
I determined that if I was going to do this kind
of work I'd have to take it in a different
direction. I wasn't going to portray female
representations as debased, demeaned, humiliated
or ridiculously compliant. I invested them with
character, with motive and personality while
giving them their own sexual agenda. I wanted the
male readers to get comfortable with the concept
of appreciating actual women with individual
features instead of lobotomized Barbi dolls as
potential sex partners. I also wanted to elevate
the profile of the male characters who were
typically shown as repulsive, diminutive
sexually-obsessed losers scoring the impossible
playmate. I wanted the men to reflect and
compliment the readers by being reasonably
attractive, well-groomed and sensual (as opposed
to simply ravenous). Some editors balked at my
subtle upgrades to the genre, but eventually they
understood that the guys buying these magazines
were no longer those same readers raised with that
40's and 50's mentality about the roles of men and
women in sexual situations. I think I got it
right. I'm still working and you can find my
artwork regularly in SCORE magazines like
"18eighteen".

This exhibition was made possible by a

Design and Decor Framers of Santa Ana.
The unique figural aesthetic of Michael
Kirwan depicts a dizzying array of obscure
fetishes and indulgent scenarios in lurid
color. Kirwan's work falls into two
categories: that work which he does to make
a living and that which he does for his own
personal satisfaction as an artist. Being a
gay man who is often called upon to
represent heterosexual scenes in his
professional life give his commercial work a
unique perspective. He identifies as much
with the male figures (the subject of his
work) as with the female (the object) and as
such objectifies neither. His characters
seem to express a measure of empathy with
the intended audience: they are the viewer
in a way, or the person he fantasizes
himself to be. It is this connection with
the subject that makes Kirwan's
illustrations special. They are not empty
shells filled with sexuality, they seem more
like real growing creatures expressing a
sexuality of their own.
The work on display in the exhibition is
from Kirwan's professional life. The work he
does in private and often shows as part of
the Tom of Finland Foundation's exhibitions
is a direct link to the visual heritage of
that organization's namesake but with a
different geographic origin. If the ghost of
Tom's heroic sailors and lumberjacks still
stride the Scandinavian countryside, the
same spirit lives in Kirwan's unemployed
salesmen and short-order cooks of the Bronx
and the Waterfront. It is a common and
confident male form, indulgent in it's
sexuality, not apologetic.
I first got involved in this field
(commercial illustration for adult
magazines) back in the very early 90s I
researched what other illustrators were
submitting and was pretty dismayed by what
I discovered. The women were depicted as
vacuous interchangeable blow-up dolls who
portrayed neither emotion or personality.
The men, when they were even allowed in
the frame, were shown as nebbish, creepy
little perverts who slobbered and grasped
shamelessly at the preternaturally lovely
women accommodating them. This industry
standard didn't sit well with me. I take a
great deal of pleasure in humanizing
characters and investing them with both
personality and sexuality. I don't judge
people. It's not my job. But illustrating
porn is my job and I take pride in the
fact that none of my randy little
creations is debased, demeaned or derided
for being different. They're horny, happy
and human. I see each scene through each
of the character's eyes, and everybody
always sees what they like. - Michael
Kirwan
The exhibition includes over 30 works by the
prolific artist and a selection of original
works by Tom of Finland. |

I'm going to be in New

Fair on May 20th, 21st, and 22nd. I'll be signing
limited edition posters that I designed for the event
at the Gay, Lesbian, Tricycle Center in the West
Village. I'm not exhibiting this year but a number of
gallery representatives will have examples of my work
for sale, so I'll have plenty of time to get on
everybody's nerves. The posters are BEAUTIFUL and very
horny and only $25.00 each.
Come say "hi". Buy a

Buy me a few drinks.
Hahaha!!! Later.
